Outdoor Gear for West Leadership Academy Kids

Date posted: January 14, 2014

West Leadership Academy (at West HS) is planning a springtime, 4-day, 22-mile backtracking trip and the kids are in need of gear. The poverty rate in the neighborhood surrounding the school is ~40%. (That’s 2 1/2 times the national average.) And this may be the only time some of these kids get to have this kind of experience (although we hope it would be the first of many.) We are looking for donations of adult/teen-sized outdoor clothing (hiking boots, warm hats, sun hats, long underwear, rain gear, fleece jackets…), backpacks, and small items like headlamps, sunscreen, sunglasses, and water bottles.

If you have some unused gear that you would be willing to part with, you can drop it off at the main campus office (951 Elati St.) and give it directly to the principal, Theresa Klava, or have the office staff put it in her office. (There are currently 3 schools operating on the West campus so it’s important to be specific about Theresa from WLA.) Or, if you have gear but are pretty sure you won’t get around to bringing it to the school, send me a message or leave a comment with your address and I’ll see about organizing someone to come pick it up from you.
